HAIR RESTORATION: PRP & POLYNUCLEOTIDES in MANCHESTER
The Clinical Picture:
1
Diagnosing the Cause
“Hair loss" is a broad symptom, not a single diagnosis. As GPs, our first role is to identify why you are losing hair, as this dictates the treatment pathway. We commonly treat:
Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Baldness): The most common cause (95% of cases). This is genetic and hormonal, where Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) causes follicles to shrink and produce wispy, thin hairs ("Miniaturisation").
Telogen Effluvium (Stress Shedding): A reactive condition caused by physical or emotional stress (e.g., post-pregnancy, illness, or rapid weight loss from Mounjaro or Ozempic). This pushes a large number of follicles into the "resting" phase simultaneously, leading to diffuse shedding 3 months later.
Alopecia Areata: An autoimmune condition where the body attacks the hair follicles, causing sudden, smooth round patches of baldness.
Traction Alopecia: Mechanical damage caused by tight hairstyles pulling on the follicle over many years.
Our Medical Approach

Stimulating the Anagen Phase
Once a follicle has scarred over (shiny baldness), injectable treatments are ineffective. However, in the thinning stages where the follicle is still alive, we can medically intervene. Our goal is to increase the blood supply to the scalp and deliver high concentrations of biological signalling molecules directly to the hair bulb to force it back into the active growth phase.

Prescription Support:
As GPs, we can also discuss adjunct medical therapies (such as Finasteride or Minoxidil) to block DHT systemically while we treat the scalp locally. All prescriptions require a face to face consultation in Manchester.
PRP involves handling blood products, which carries a strict requirement for sterility. As doctors, we perform this procedure using full aseptic technique to eliminate the risk of infection. We also perform a rigorous assessment first: if you suffer from Scarring Alopecia (such as Lichen Planopilaris), regenerative treatments are often contraindicated, and we will refer you to a specialist rather than selling you a treatment that will not work.
