TREATING AGING SKIN & PHOTO-DAMAGE IN MANCHESTER

The Clinical Picture

1

Skin ageing is a complex process involving a combination of intrinsic factors (genetics) and extrinsic factors (environment). Up to 80% of these extrinsic factors are attributed to UV exposure, a process known as photo-ageing. This exposure degrades the supporting Collagen, Elastin, and Hyaluronic Acid content of the skin, while simultaneously disrupting melanocyte activity and reducing skin barrier function. The combination results in the visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkles and pigmentation, and an increased susceptibility to skin cancer

Our Medical Approach

2

We approach skin ageing as a medical condition. Therefore, we only utilise treatments supported by Level 1 Evidence (the highest degree of medical efficacy). Our core protocols include prescription Tretinoin, Botulinum Toxin, and structural Dermal Fillers.

Clinical Solutions

SPF 50:

This is non-negotiable. It is not just a cream; it is a radiation barrier. Without daily broad-spectrum protection, all other treatments are chemically futile.

Prescription Tretinoin:

Through our partnership with Klira, we prescribe Tretinoin (Retinoic Acid). This is the gold standard for sun damage. It forces the skin cells to turn over rapidly, shedding damaged DNA and stimulating new collagen production to thicken the dermis.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections:

We use Botulinum Toxin to relax facial muscles, preventing dynamic movements from etching permanent "static" lines into the weakened skin.

Dermal Fillers:

Aging is also defined by volume loss. We use structural fillers to replace the deep fat pads in the cheeks and temples that atrophy over time. This re-inflates the skin envelope, reducing sagging and restoring the curves of youth.

Medical Safety & Protocol:

When treating photo-aged skin, our primary responsibility as GPs is to screen for cellular abnormalities. Before any aesthetic injectable, we examine your face for suspicious lesions (such as Actinic Keratosis, Basal Cell Carcinoma, or irregular moles). If we identify any concerning signs of skin cancer, we will refer you immediately for appropriate dermatological management rather than proceeding with cosmetic treatment.
